The Democrats have won control of Congress in a sweeping victory at the US midterm elections. The heavy defeat for the Republicans is being seen as a direct rejection of Donald Trump's two years in office.

Economic Strain

High living costs drove anger among voters across the country. Prices jumped by 3.7% in the year up to September, pushed up by steep fuel and energy costs. Government data showed US retail diesel prices in early October came close to the record high of $6.52 per gallon seen in September. Exit polls revealed that 79% of voters faced severe or moderate hardship from inflation over the past year. Over six in ten respondents blamed these high prices directly on the president's policies.

The Iran Conflict

A major cause of the soaring prices was the war with Iran that the US and Israel started in February. Fuel costs spiked after Tehran closed the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off a vital route for global oil and gas. Most Americans disliked the war. About 63% of poll respondents said entering the military conflict was the wrong choice, and 74% called the war a major factor in their congressional vote. Following the election, Trump conceded the war hurt his party but defended his actions as necessary to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

Democratic Wins

Democratic candidates ran strong, focused campaigns in traditional Republican areas. They kept their message tied to everyday concerns like living costs and healthcare access. In Texas and Kansas, former teacher James Talarico and pastor Adam Hamilton won support by talking about their faith. Former paediatrician Annie Andrews pulled off a surprise win in South Carolina by focusing on healthcare costs. Former public health official Abdul El-Sayed won in Michigan with a message centered on putting money in people's pockets. Senator Jon Ossoff won re-election in Georgia after focusing on the cost of living and corruption, sparking talks of a possible 2028 presidential run. Trump himself even admitted to Fox News that the Democrats ran a good campaign.

Context

Midterm elections in the United States take place halfway through a president's four-year term and often result in the ruling party losing seats in Congress. Economic pressures and public disapproval of foreign conflicts frequently shape the outcome of these races.

What Happened

Democrats took control of Congress in the US midterm elections following a widespread backlash against the Republican party, driven heavily by public anger over inflation and the ongoing military conflict with Iran.

Why It Matters

Losing control of Congress severely limits a sitting president's ability to pass domestic legislation and enact their core policy agenda during the second half of their term. It also alters the balance of power in Washington, empowering the opposition party to launch investigations and block executive appointments.

What Happens Next

The newly empowered Democratic majority in Congress will take office to shape federal legislation, while the political fallout from the midterm defeat is expected to influence upcoming political alignments and future presidential election cycles.
