InterGlobe Aviation shares jump over 7% as oil prices tumble
Reported by Pooja Nair (Section Editor) · Livemint - Markets ·
InterGlobe Aviation, the parent of IndiGo, surged more than 7% on Thursday, 5 November, making it the Nifty 50’s top gainer. The rise extended the airline’s winning streak to five straight sessions and lifted its cumulative gain to 17.5% over the period. The rally was sparked by a sharp fall in global crude oil prices, which lifted sentiment across airline stocks. Brent crude slipped below $94 a barrel after falling over 8% in the previous session, following signals that the US and Iran were open to peace talks. Lower oil prices benefit airlines because aviation turbine fuel makes up a large part of their operating costs. Oil prices continued their decline for a fourth day on Thursday, with market participants expecting that the losses suffered by US President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in the congressional elections could lower the risk of further escalation in the US‑Israeli‑Iran conflict. Reuters reported that Brent futures fell 97 cents, or 1.03%, to $93.65 a barrel at 0211 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate dropped $1.14, or 1.29%, to $86.98 a barrel. Both benchmarks had plunged more than 8% in the prior session, reaching their lowest levels since 31 August. ## Context The move shows how quickly airline stocks can react to changes in fuel costs, and it highlights the broader market sensitivity to geopolitical developments that influence oil supply and pricing.
