UPDATE - follow-up to Stock Market LIVE: Sensex surges 2,000 pts, Nifty reclaims 24,500; Nifty Auto rises 4%: The Nifty50 and the Sensex climbed sharply as oil prices fell quickly. This drop in oil prices came on hopes that the US-Iran conflict might get resolved faster after political changes in the United States. In the wider market space, the Nifty MidCap went up by 1.19 per cent. At the same time, the Nifty SmallCap index gained 1.14 per cent. Major stock price gainers included Bajaj Finance and Tata Motors.

Context

Falling crude oil prices generally help the Indian economy because the country imports a large share of its energy needs. Lower oil costs tend to reduce import bills and ease inflation pressures for local markets.
