Reported by Rohit Yadav (Staff Writer) · Business Standard - Top Stories ·
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at Palazzo Chigi in Rome to discuss Tata Motors buying a major stake in Iveco Group.
The Meeting
Chandrasekaran shared the Tata Group's business plan with Prime Minister Meloni on Wednesday. Sources said the talks highlighted growing economic and industrial ties between Italy and India. The Tata Sons Chairman thanked the Italian government and Prime Minister Meloni along with Minister Adolfo Urso for their support during the deal.
The Deal
Tata Motors bought an 89.42 per cent stake in Iveco for nearly 3.43 billion euros following an initial cash offer settlement. This makes the leading Italian commercial vehicle maker an indirect subsidiary of Tata Motors. The combined companies operate in over 130 countries across Europe, India, South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, with combined revenues of 21 billion euros.
Past Ties
Chandrasekaran recalled Tata Motors' long history with Turin, noting that the design of the company's first homegrown car took shape at the design house Idea in the late 1990s under former Chairman Ratan Tata. Both companies expect strong growth in sales, income, and profit margins over the next five years.
Context
Cross-border corporate acquisitions of this scale often involve complex regulatory approvals and political dialogue at the highest levels of government. Major industrial investments like this one frequently bring together manufacturing capabilities and global supply chains across multiple continents.
