Dark Circles in Children Often Linked to Genetics, Allergies, Not Just Sleep
Reported by Abhishek Tiwari (Copy Editor) · The Hindu - Health ·
Dark circles under a child's eyes are frequently harmless and not always tied to insufficient sleep. The discoloration, medically known as periorbinal hyperpigmentation, can be a hereditary trait passed from parents. In many cases it also signals allergies, chronic nasal congestion or skin conditions rather than poor rest. Doctors stress that the marks themselves are not a disease; they become a concern only if they persist despite normal health or appear alongside other symptoms. Pediatricians advise parents to seek professional advice when the shadows do not fade over time, when the child shows signs of itching, runny nose, or when the skin around the eyes looks inflamed. In such instances a health professional can identify underlying allergy or congestion issues and suggest appropriate treatment. Otherwise, if the child is otherwise healthy and the dark circles remain steady, they are typically a benign family characteristic. ## Context These eye‑area shadows are common in children and often reflect inherited skin pigmentation patterns or environmental triggers such as dust or pollen that aggravate nasal passages.
