Karnataka plans to add nearly 30 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity over the next five years. Energy Department Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta shared this plan at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

Growth And Plans

The State's clean energy capacity grew from 16 gigawatts in 2022 to 23 gigawatts. Officials aim to add 5 to 7 gigawatts of new capacity every year. Karnataka also led the country in wind capacity additions during the 2024 to 2025 period by adding 1,331 megawatts. Under the State Resource Adequacy Plan, officials plan to add 41.5 gigawatts of new wind and solar capacity along with about 11,000 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage by the year 2035. Work is already moving forward on large projects, including a 250-megawatt solar project with 1,100 megawatt-hours of storage at Ryapte.

Context

State governments across India are pushing hard for green energy to meet national climate goals and reduce reliance on older power sources like coal and hydropower. Karnataka already has strong natural advantages for solar and wind power, which help attract private companies to invest in clean energy projects.
