Reported by Deepak Mishra (Copy Editor) · The Hindu - National ·
The Clash
Home Minister Priyank Kharge used the term halli guggu, meaning village idiot, to refer to Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. This remark escalated their ongoing war of words over a sting operation investigation. The trouble started when Mr. Kumaraswamy questioned how a sensitive investigation could be live-streamed, asking if authorities were running the reality show Bigg Boss. Mr. Kharge hit back by asking if Mr. Kumaraswamy was a village idiot who made baseless allegations every day.
Reactions
The Janata Dal Secular launched a social media campaign using the slogan 'I too am Halli Guggu.' Mr. Kumaraswamy stated that the words did not hurt him personally, but argued that Congress was insulting the farming community and rural residents. He demanded that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge answer for his son's comments. Meanwhile, BJP leaders stepped in to back Mr. Kumaraswamy. Assembly Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok criticized Mr. Kharge on social media, quoting a famous Dr. Raj Kumar song to defend the pride of villagers.
Context
Name-calling and sharp verbal exchanges are common features of political rivalry between competing parties in India. Leaders often frame remarks about individuals as insults to entire communities to rally public support.
