Surya Yadav was left out of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad even though he confirmed his availability a week earlier. The Mumbai Cricket Association announced a 16‑player list on Monday, and both Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal told the committee they could play. Only Jaiswal appears on the roster.
Squad Details
Chief selector Rajesh Pawar explained that Yadav has not featured in any red‑ball match for the past one and a half years, and that a few games in the format could earn him a place. MCA officials said they called Yadav several times but received no response. The team will face Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium from October 11‑14. Siddhesh Lad has been named captain and Ayush Mhatre will serve as vice‑captain. Pawar praised Jaiswal's return, noting the youngster needs match practice and has confirmed his availability. He added that Jaiswal could also be selected for either the senior side or the A team touring New Zealand, and the current squad covers only the opening match. The lineup also includes Sarfaraz Khan, who recently played for the Rest of India side that beat Jammu and Kashmir in the Irani Cup, and all‑rounder Shams Mulani, whose performance helped India A win the two‑match series against Australia A. Mhatre, who led India to the Under‑19 World Cup title earlier this year, earned the vice‑captaincy. Pacer Shardul Thakur is absent after a recent injury. Mumbai's squad: Siddhesh Lad (captain), Ayush Mhatre (vice‑captain), Shams Mulani, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tanush Kotian, Atharva Ankolekar, Divyaansh Saxena, Tushar Deshpande, Musheer Khan, Mohit Avasthi, Sarfaraz Khan, Sylvester D'Souza, Suved Parkar, Onkar Tarmale, Aakash Anand (wk), Hardik Tamore (wk).
Context
Selection decisions often hinge on recent experience in the longer format, and missing red‑ball practice can keep a player out of state squads even if he is fit for limited‑overs cricket.
