Squad Announcement

India's T20 World Cup winning captain Suryakumar Yadav has been left out of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad for their opening match against Chandigarh, according to ABP News. The match is scheduled to be played from October 11 to 15, 2026, with the squad announced on Monday, October 5. Siddhesh Lad will lead the team as captain, and young batsman Ayush Mhatre has been appointed as the vice-captain.

Selection Details

Reports indicate that Suryakumar had made himself available for the upcoming domestic season, yet his name was missing from the released player list. The 36-year-old batsman last played for India as captain in the T20 World Cup final and has not featured in the national team setup since then. Shreyas Iyer later took over the T20 captaincy for India. The full 16-player squad also includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Divyansh Saxena, Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz Khan, Suved Parkar, wicketkeepers Akash Anand and Hardik Tamore, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Atharva Ankolekar, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Avasthi, Sylvester Dsouza, and Onkar Tarmale.

Context

Domestic cricket tournaments like the Ranji Trophy serve as the primary red-ball platform for players seeking selection or a return to the Indian national team. Major selection changes often occur as teams look to balance experienced campaigners with emerging young talent for multi-format seasons.
