Looking down at a device for hours leaves the neck in an awkward position and causes muscle fatigue, stiffness, headaches, and ongoing pain. Dr Zahir Abbas Merchant explains that the problem is not the device itself, but how people position themselves while using it.

Workspace Changes

When a person keeps the head tilted forward for a long time, the neck muscles work harder to support the head. Dr Merchant warns that poor posture can affect the natural curve of the neck, leading to wear and discomfort. To reduce strain, he recommends standing up, walking around, and gently moving the neck and shoulders every 30 to 40 minutes instead of sitting continuously.

Medical Attention

While rest and posture adjustments often help, Dr Merchant advises seeing a doctor if the pain gets worse or does not go away. Medical evaluation is also necessary if pain spreads into the arms, or if a person feels numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms.

Context

Neck strain from extended screen time is a common physical issue for office workers and students who spend long hours at a desk. Making small adjustments to daily habits and workstation setups can prevent minor stiffness from turning into a long-term problem.
