India and Switzerland signed fresh mobility pacts and resolved to broaden cooperation in the defence and atomic energy sectors following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin on Monday. The discussions also marked the first anniversary of the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement between India and the European Free Trade Association.

Mobility Pacts

The newly signed Migration and Mobility Partnership aims to foster cooperation on equal treatment principles while checking illegal migration and human trafficking. This arrangement grants multiple-entry permits for a duration of up to five years, allowing stays of up to six months per visit alongside renewable one-year student permissions. A separate agreement for young professionals enables an annual exchange of 300 individuals per nation, a figure that could rise to 500, backed by a verification window of 30 to 90 days for nationality and residency status.

Trade And Investment

Prime Minister Modi noted that the free trade deal serves as a framework to secure $100 billion in investments and generate one million direct jobs across the country over the next 15 years. The expanded market access will boost Indian shipments of agriculture items, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods. Meanwhile, India anticipates fresh Swiss capital inflows into biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability.

Defence And Infrastructure

Both leaders identified new areas for collaboration in military exchanges and defense manufacturing, alongside a consensus to deepen engagement in nuclear power. Modi highlighted existing infrastructure joint efforts such as the Varanasi ropeway, Noida's Jewar Airport, and various mountain railway and tunnelling projects. Additional joint research initiatives spanning health, clean energy, and space are slated to launch soon, preceded by the India-EFTA Prosperity Summit on Wednesday.

Context

Bilateral ties between New Delhi and Bern have steadily expanded through high-level diplomatic exchanges and comprehensive economic agreements. The European Free Trade Association bloc links Switzerland with Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein to foster regional trade. Such bilateral frameworks are designed to build resilient supply chains and boost high-value technological collaboration between growing economies and advanced industrial nations.
