UPDATE - follow-up to Rahul, Priyanka among 260 detained during INDIA bloc march to ECI in Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several other opposition figures walked free from police custody late Tuesday night following an extensive protest and sit-in in the capital.
What Happened
Delhi police had earlier taken about two hundred and sixty individuals into custody, which included ten members of parliament, after demonstrators pushed past security barricades during an opposition alliance march toward the election authority office. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS were active in the New Delhi zone as the march commenced near Parliament House at approximately 10.30 a.m. Following the initial police action, opposition figures including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K.C. Venugopal, Pawan Khera, and Manish Chatrath entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises alongside dozens of supporters without official clearance. Inside the building, Rahul Gandhi insisted on waiting until an official parliamentary delegation secured a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, before law enforcement officials eventually removed and detained them.
Reactions and Demands
The day-long demonstrations were aimed at pressing for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. Opposition participants targeted the poll body over electoral roll revisions and cited media reports alleging that fellow election commissioners had previously recorded objections regarding commission decisions. During the sit-in, Rahul Gandhi posted a message on social media calling for the election chief to step down, while other prominent opposition leaders including Akhilesh Yadav, Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O'Brien, and John Brittas also joined the protests.
Context
This event highlights ongoing political friction between opposition parties and constitutional bodies in India over electoral transparency and administrative procedures. Mass protests near central government and regulatory offices often draw heavy security deployments and strict enforcement of prohibitory orders to maintain public order.
