Former Ohio music pastor Caleb Flynn, 40, who briefly appeared on “American Idol,” is set to be sentenced after a jury convicted him of murdering his wife. In February, Flynn staged a fake home invasion and shot his 37‑year‑old wife, Ashley Flynn, a schoolteacher and volleyball coach, then claimed a burglar was responsible. Police found his fingerprints, DNA and phone data placing him at the scene, while the murder weapon was never recovered. Flynn had been a contestant on the 2013 season of “American Idol,” where he talked about his wife's encouragement but did not move past the Hollywood audition before judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj. When officers entered the house, his two daughters were present with him. He later addressed the courtroom in tears, apologising to his daughters and saying he failed his wedding vows, yet he insisted he did not kill his wife, adding that he stands before God as his ultimate judge. Prosecutors showed a text Flynn sent to his lover the night before the killing, reading “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.” The lover, Alleigha Botner, met Flynn in 2022 as a 20‑year‑old church intern and had an affair lasting more than a year. Botner testified that Flynn expressed hatred for his wife and talked about killing her, and prosecutors played AI‑generated love songs he allegedly created for her. Flynn’s attorney argued there was no gun evidence linking him to the shooting. The jury returned verdicts of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. He now faces a possible life sentence without parole.

Context

The case shows how digital messages, forensic traces and testimony can overturn a defendant’s claim of a burglary in a domestic homicide.
