Confirmed by a second source: TechCrunch
Nvidia-backed startup Reflection AI has launched its first open-weight model named Beam to compete with lower-cost Chinese models in coding and agentic tasks.
Model Details
Beam is a text-only mixture-of-experts model that contains 501 billion total parameters, but activates only 23 billion for each task to run faster and cheaper. According to TechCrunch, it was pretrained on 23.8 trillion tokens and features a 1 million token context window. Reflection states that Beam matches the performance of Z.ai's GLM-5.2 model and is closing in on Qwen3.8-Max. By comparison, Z.ai's GLM-5.2 has 744 billion total parameters with 40 billion active parameters.
Company Background
Founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou, the Brooklyn-based startup develops software development automation tools. The company has raised roughly $4.7 billion from backers including Nvidia, Sequoia Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners, reaching a $25 billion pre-money valuation. Reflection also signed major compute deals worth more than $7 billion with SpaceX and Nebius to secure access to Nvidia chips through 2029.
Context
Open-weight AI models allow developers and enterprises to download and customize the underlying software for their own use rather than relying solely on restricted cloud services. This market segment has seen intense competition as Western firms try to match the low costs and high capabilities offered by Chinese labs.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
Reflection AI debuted Beam, its first open-weight text-only AI model, designed to offer advanced reasoning, coding, and agentic capabilities at a lower cost than existing competitors.
Why It Matters
Western tech firms are facing heavy pressure from cheap, highly customizable open-weight models developed in China, such as DeepSeek and Z.ai. By offering a model with fewer active parameters that still scores well on benchmarks, Reflection aims to provide a competitive Western alternative for enterprises and governments seeking local control over their AI infrastructure.
What Happens Next
Beam's performance claims still need independent verification by the wider tech community. Meanwhile, Reflection plans to continue locking down massive computing power and marketing its technology to enterprises and sovereign nations through customized AI factory setups.
