Polling is underway for five Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry, with the Election Commission releasing early turnout figures by 9 am.

Morning Voter Turnout

Nandigram in West Bengal recorded the highest turnout among reporting constituencies at 20.89 percent by 9 am. Thattanchavady in Puducherry saw 19.2 percent voting, while Assam's Nagaon Lok Sabha seat recorded over 17 percent. In Tamil Nadu, Madurantakam stood at 15.99 percent and Dharapuram reached 17.55 percent, with both seats reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates. Voting in Bengal will run until 6 pm, while Assam polls close at 5 pm, and votes in both states will be counted on October 9.

Key Controversey And Detentions

In West Bengal's Murshidabad district, Aam Janata Unnayan Party president Humayun Kabir was detained by police during the Rejinagar bypoll following a verbal argument at the party office. Kabir alleged that police interfered with voting, targeted Muslim voters, and held 64 of his supporters for two months. His son, Golam Nabi Azad, is contesting the seat for the party. Meanwhile, Bengal Congress leaders alleged EVM issues, booth capturing, and voter intimidation in Nandigram.

Tamil Nadu And Puducherry Bypolls

Tamil Nadu's Madurantakam and Dharapuram elections followed the resignations of former AIADMK MLAs K Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama, who joined the ruling TVK and are running again. Technical issues with EVMs were reported at some polling stations in Tamil Nadu, including a ballot unit change in Madurantakam after agent objections. In Puducherry, the Thattanchavady poll serves as a test for the four-month-old NDA government led by Chief Minister N Rangasamy.

Context

By-elections are held when a legislative seat falls vacant due to resignation, disqualification, or the death of an incumbent member. These localized polls often serve as mid-term tests of strength for ruling parties and regional alliances between general elections.
