The famous Hollywood sign on Mount Lee in Los Angeles serves as a wildlife home and a key ecological zone.
Wildlife and Park
Sitting inside Griffith Park, which is about five times the size of New York's Central Park, the area around the sign houses birds nesting in the letters, snakes at its base, and bobcats roaming nearby. The hillside spans 4,310 acres, or about 6.5 square miles. The Educational Research Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, named Griffith Park a Significant Ecological Area because it acts as a pathway for animal movement between the Santa Monica, San Gabriel, and Verdugo Mountains. Researchers have found about 200 bird species, 50 butterfly species, and 40 mammal species in the park. The site also gained fame when a 2013 National Geographic photo captured the wild mountain lion P-22 prowling near the illuminated sign. Diana Wright, official caretaker for the Hollywood Sign Trust, notes that the sign was built in 1923 as a temporary housing ad for 'Hollywoodland' before later being rebuilt with steel and concrete by a campaign led by Hugh Hefner in 1978.
Fire Detection
Scientists are now setting up cameras on the letters to watch for fires in the basin. Caretakers are working with Torch Systems, a tech firm using solar-powered sensors, to run an AI smoke-detection service that spots smoke from miles away. Fire is the biggest risk to the area, especially from visitors dropping lit cigarettes. Caretakers also clear brush, control erosion, and plan to plant native California flowers on the hillside.
Context
Urban parks often serve as vital refuges for local wildlife as cities expand around natural landscapes. Protecting these green spaces helps maintain biodiversity and prevents urban sprawl from cutting off animal migration paths.
