Medical graduates who finished their MBBS studies abroad and are doing internships in Gujarat will now get a monthly stipend of Rs 21,840. Health Minister Pansheriya announced this step on Monday to bring foreign medical graduates on par with local medical college interns.
Details and Reaction
The move applies to around 350 foreign medical graduates allotted internship postings in the state between June 1 and October 1, 2026. These doctors work at government and GMERS medical colleges. The National Medical Commission requires all students with foreign MBBS degrees to complete a mandatory one-year internship in India. The All India Medical Students' Association welcomed the decision, calling it the result of continuous follow-up and unity among students.
Context
Medical internships are a necessary final step for graduates to gain hands-on clinical experience before getting full medical licenses to practice. Across many Indian states, student groups and associations have spent recent years pushing for equal pay and support for foreign medical graduates doing their required local training.
