UPDATE - follow-up to Harmanpreet Kaur steps down as India captain in all formats: Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down from her role as captain of the Indian women cricket team across all formats with immediate effect. She announced the decision on Tuesday through a lengthy post on her Instagram account. Harmanpreet stated that the choice was not easy and carries years of memories, emotions, and sacrifices.

Career Details

She took over as full-time captain across formats after Mithali Raj retired in 2022, having served earlier as Mithali's deputy. Her final act as skipper was leading the team to their second consecutive gold medal at the Asian Games last month. She has led India in five Tests, 51 ODIs, and 155 T20Is. Her T20I captaincy count of 155 matches is the most for any player across men or women cricket. She has also played a total of 210 T20I matches, which is the highest for any player across genders. Her international debut took place in March 2009 during an ODI against Pakistan, followed by her T20I debut against England and her Test debut against England in August 2014.

Achievements

The crowning achievement of her career came last year when she led India to their maiden Women World Cup title by beating South Africa in the final, after defeating runaway favourites Australia in the semifinal. She stands as the only Indian captain to win the Women World Cup and overall just the third Indian skipper to win a 50-over World Cup after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni. She is also one of five Indian captains to win any World Cup, alongside Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.

Future Plans

Harmanpreet confirmed she will continue to be available for selection in all formats. She expressed peace with her decision, stating that the team is in a good place with talent and character, and that she feels she has done her duty.

Context

Leadership transitions in sports often happen after players achieve major milestones like World Cup victories and multi-sport gold medals. Experienced players frequently step down from leadership duties to focus purely on their playing careers and extend their time on the field. Such moves also allow team management to build leadership depth for upcoming international tournaments.
