Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women's cricket team across all formats, a year after leading the side to an ODI World Cup victory. The 37-year-old announced her decision through an Instagram post on Tuesday, a day after attending a team review meeting with BCCI officials and selectors in Guwahati.

The Decision

BCCI sources stated that selectors wanted a change in leadership to build for the next World Cup cycle following the team's failure to progress past the group stage in consecutive T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026. Although Harmanpreet was keen to continue in the role, the selection committee prevailed after a review meeting that followed the Asian Games gold-medal campaign. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana is currently the front-runner to take over the leadership role, though no official announcement has been made yet. In her social media post, Harmanpreet confirmed she will continue playing for the country for the love of the game, stating that the captaincy has ended but her journey continues.

Record and Career

During her tenure, Harmanpreet captained India in five Tests, 51 ODIs, and 155 T20Is, leading the team to three Asia Cup titles and an Asian Games gold medal. She was appointed T20 captain in 2016 and took over the ODI team in 2022 following Mithali Raj's retirement. Under her leadership, India reached the 2018 T20 World Cup semifinal, the 2020 T20 World Cup final, the 2023 T20 World Cup semifinal, and won the 2025 ODI World Cup at home, which marked the nation's first ever ICC title in women's cricket. BCCI president Mithun Manhas and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia both praised her immense contributions and leadership during key moments in the sport's growth.

Context

Leadership changes in sports often follow cycles of major global tournaments, where boards look ahead to future multi-year building phases. Captains who step down from leadership roles frequently continue to contribute as senior players, bringing valuable experience to younger squad members.
