Smriti Mandhana is the new captain of the Indian women's cricket team across all formats following the departure of Harmanpreet Kaur. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the appointment on Tuesday after Harmanpreet stepped down from the role. Harmanpreet's decision came on the same day and followed a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati that looked at recent team performances, which included an exit from the T20 World Cup before the semifinals. Harmanpreet previously led India to the 2025 ODI World Cup title and stated in a social media post that she is leaving the captaincy across formats.

Leadership Record

Mandhana served as Harmanpreet's deputy and brings plenty of experience to the position after playing for the national side since 2013. The BCCI noted her leadership work in domestic and franchise cricket, including guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to Women's Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026. The 29-year-old was the second-highest run-scorer at the 2025 World Cup with 434 runs and became the first Indian woman to score international centuries in all three formats during a June 2025 match against England. Mandhana expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her by the board, selectors, and teammates while acknowledging Harmanpreet's long-term commitment and contribution as captain.

Upcoming Matches

Mandhana takes charge as the full-time white-ball captain immediately, having previously led India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs. The team's next assignment is a series against Zimbabwe that begins on October 16. Following that tour, India will host the Women's Champions Trophy in February.

Context

Leadership changes in cricket often follow major tournament reviews where boards assess both recent setbacks and long-term team direction. Franchise league success has increasingly become a stepping stone for national team leadership roles in modern cricket.
