Protest March

Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi climbed police barricades and waved a Tricolour during an opposition INDIA bloc protest march to the Election Commission of India on Tuesday. More than 300 Opposition MPs joined the march from the Parliament House complex to hand over a formal memorandum. The protest took place amid Opposition allegations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the special intensive revision exercise conducted by the poll body.

Police Action

Police stopped the march, leading the Opposition MPs to sit on the road in protest. Rahul Gandhi and Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee climbed on police barricades while protesters shouted slogans. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party MP Priyanka Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien participated in the march. Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Abhishek Banerjee, and Derek O'Brien were briefly detained, with Priyanka Gandhi briefly taken to a waiting bus before rejoining the other leaders at the Akashvani gate.

Statements

Speaking from the Akashvani complex where they staged a sit-in, Rahul Gandhi stated that the INDIA bloc was going to "destroy them" and accused Amit Shah, Narendra Modi, Mohan Bhagwat, and Gyanesh Kumar of destroying the country's democratic system. He maintained that he was saying this with careful consideration and that action would be taken against them.

Context

Protest marches by political parties toward key government offices are a common method used to draw public attention to policy disputes or institutional concerns. The Election Commission of India is the constitutional authority responsible for conducting free and fair elections across the country.
