Eleven Indian nationals serving on a commercial cargo ship suffered injuries when a projectile struck the vessel off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz. New Delhi reacted strongly to the incident, issuing an official condemnation through the Ministry of External Affairs.

Details of the Attack

The ship, named MT On Peace and registered under the flag of Panama, carried a total crew of 19 people, out of which 17 were citizens of India. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that 12 crew members in total sustained injuries during the strike, with 11 of them being Indian nationals. Local authorities in Oman stepped in to help evacuate the injured sailors, who were subsequently taken to Khasab for medical care. According to reports from the Hindustan Times, the vessel bears the IMO number 9893204.

Wider Concerns

The Indian government stated that ongoing attacks on commercial vessels in these waters pose a worry for the country. Officials called for an immediate stop to such assaults to bring back peace and stability. The statement stressed that international waterways must remain safe for civilian infrastructure, commerce, and seafarers.

Context

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital sea passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, carrying a large share of the world's oil and global cargo. Security in this narrow waterway is critical for global trade, meaning disruptions or attacks on ships there immediately affect shipping insurance costs and regional stability.
