India is among seven countries officially interested in hosting the 2036 Olympic Games and will present its project to the International Olympic Committee next month. The International Olympic Committee stated on Tuesday that the other nations in the running are Germany, Hungary, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, and Turkiye.
Project Details
These interested countries are currently in continuous dialogue with the world sports body. Their Games projects will be checked on technical factors like venue plans, athlete experience, funding, public support, delivery skills, and long-term community benefits. The governing body has set a strict deadline of October 31, after which no other new parties will be considered for the 2036 event.
India's Bid
India submitted its official expression of interest in 2024, choosing Ahmedabad as the host city for the mega-event. The country has never hosted the Olympics before. The Indian Olympic Association will lead the talks alongside the Gujarat government and with the backing of the Union Sports Ministry. The final host for the 2036 Games will be chosen in mid-2029.
Context
Hosting the Olympic Games requires massive financial investment, long-term infrastructure planning, and extensive government backing to build sports venues and transport networks. The International Olympic Committee evaluates these bids carefully to ensure that host cities can manage both the event itself and its lasting impact on the local public after the games end.
