T‑Mobile rolls out customizable ‘T‑Mix’ plan with Bryan Cranston in new ad
Reported by Deepak Mishra (Copy Editor) · Variety ·
What Happened
T‑Mobile introduced its new customizable plan called T‑Mix, using a 60‑second TV spot that features actor Bryan Cranston and a rooster named George as an alarm‑clock style wake‑up call. The ad shows Cranston shouting “Come on sleepyheads, it’s time to change the plan!” while waking people in hotel rooms, airplane seats and bedrooms. The commercial premiered during Amazon Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football and will run on broadcast TV, streaming services, cinemas, digital platforms, radio and billboards.
Reaction
Lucy McLellan, who heads brand and communications at T‑Mobile, said the campaign is meant to reach people who have stopped paying attention to mobile‑carrier ads, especially beyond the millennial group the company has usually targeted. The spot was produced with the agency Highdive and required two days of shooting with many takes, because every second counts in a short ad. Cranston, known for roles in Breaking Bad and Seinfeld, compared his role to a modern Pied Piper who shows viewers they can build a plan that fits their own needs.
Context
Customizable phone plans are becoming more common as consumers look for flexibility, and T‑Mobile’s T‑Mix joins similar efforts by rivals such as Verizon’s “Simplicity Plan” that also uses celebrity ads to attract attention.
