House Democratic Leaders Launch Bids for Top Posts After Majority Win
Reported by Siddharth Deshmukh (Staff Writer) · CBS News - Politics ·
Democrats have secured victories in key House races across multiple states following redrawn maps and intense battleground contests.
District Results
Cyril Jefferson beat Republican Representative Addison McDowell in North Carolina's 6th District, Paul Barringer defeated Republican Representative Brad Knott in the 13th District, and Lakesha Womack won against Republican Representative Tim Moore in the 14th District. Democratic Representative Don Davis secured a win in North Carolina's 1st District against Republican Laurie Buckhout after multiple rounds of state-level map redrawing. Shannon Taylor defeated Republican Representative Rob Wittman in Virginia's 1st District, ending nearly five decades of Republican control that began in 1977. In Montana, Sam Forstag beat Aaron Flint to take a seat held by retiring Republican Representative Ryan Zinke, marking the first time in over thirty years that a Democrat will represent the state in the lower chamber. Marni von Wilpert defeated Republican Jim Desmond in California's 48th District, a seat held by retiring Republican Representative Darrell Issa.
Leadership Races
Democratic leaders are now competing for key positions for the upcoming Congress. Joe Neguse announced his bid for assistant speaker in a letter to colleagues on Thursday. A potential point of tension exists as both Neguse and Ted Lieu seek the No. 4 spot, while Lieu is running for Caucus chair. Pete Aguilar launched a bid for House majority whip, and Katherine Clark announced her run for majority leader, which would make her the first woman to serve in that role if elected. Meanwhile, Republicans are also organizing, with Erin Houchin challenging Lisa McClain for the GOP conference chair position.
Context
Congressional map redrawing by state legislatures often alters the political balance of battleground districts before major elections. Leadership elections within party caucuses determine committee assignments and legislative priorities for the upcoming congressional term.
