Bihar NDA Holds Review Meeting After Council Poll Results
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary held a meeting of National Democratic Alliance leaders on Thursday at his official residence, named Lok Sevak Awas, to review the results of the recent Bihar Legislative Council elections across eight seats.
Election Results
Out of the eight contested seats, the NDA managed to win three. The Bharatiya Janata Party secured two seats, while the Janata Dal (United) won one. Both major ruling parties had contested four seats each. Meanwhile, the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal won two seats, and Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party won one seat to enter the Council. Independent candidates took the remaining two seats.
Alliance Tension
Independent candidates Bansdihar Brajwasi and Rahul Raj defeated JD(U) candidates Abhishek Jha and Anand Pushkar from the Tirhut Graduates and Saran Teachers seats respectively. Both winners later joined or extended their support to the BJP, sparking anger within the JD(U). During the review meeting, JD(U) leaders accused their alliance partner of not cooperating and trying to sabotage their candidates. JD(U) National Working President Sanjay Jha also held a separate meeting with losing candidates to collect written complaints about a lack of cooperation from BJP workers, with plans for strict action against anyone involved in anti-party activities.
Other Developments
Following the alliance meeting, BJP State President Sanjay Saraogi told reporters that leaders discussed preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Vaishali on November 21. This visit falls a day after the NDA government led by Mr. Choudhary completes one year in office. Outside the alliance, Prashant Kishor commented on the internal strife by stating that Nitish Kumar was the true strength of the JD(U), adding that the party now lacks a leader, leadership, and policy.
Context
Legislative Council elections in India are often seen as an important test of grassroots party strength and alliance coordination between partner parties. Tensions between coalition partners frequently surface when local election results do not go as planned or when independent winners shift their loyalties after a vote.
