UPDATE - follow-up to Foreign Secretary Misri sets stage for Nepal PM's upcoming India visit: Nepali leaders thanked India for providing quick and major help with relief and technical work after the Bhotekoshi floods, a joint press statement revealed. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri wrapped up his two-day trip to Nepal on Thursday after meeting Prime Minister Balendra Shah in Kathmandu to talk about plans for the Nepali leader's upcoming trip to New Delhi.
Official Talks
Mr. Misri also held formal meetings with Nepali Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle, Foreign Minister Sisir Khanal, Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, and Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal. Both sides talked over current ties in trade, power generation, transport links, border control, and people ties, along with new sectors like artificial intelligence and digital links. Prime Minister Shah took office in March following the youth-led protests in September 2025 that removed the prior administration. Mr. Shah previously pointed to territorial disputes in the Lipulekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura regions, and tried to bring in outside nations like China and the UK, though India insists on direct talks.
Context
India and Nepal share deep cultural and economic ties alongside an open border that permits free movement of citizens. High-level diplomatic visits help both neighbors clear up political differences and plan joint development projects.
