AI-Focused Hedge Fund VARA Drops 33 Percent in October Market Slump
Reported by Aakash Bora (Staff Writer) · Livemint - Markets ·

Value Aligned Research Advisors, a hedge fund heavily invested in artificial intelligence stocks, suffered a 33 percent drop in October as technology shares took a sharp hit. The Princeton, New Jersey-based firm shared in an update that despite this steep monthly decline, Class C shareholders were still looking at a 13 percent gain for the year. This rough patch follows an even steeper loss in July, when the fund crashed by 44 percent.
Market Pressures
October brought a severe market downturn for technology shares due to growing worries about whether artificial intelligence will generate enough money to pay off the huge debts tech companies are taking on for new models. This wave of selling pushed the Nasdaq 100 Index down by 6.7 percent during the month, marking its worst drop in over eighteen months. The downward trend spilled over into November, sending the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index down by 12 percent on a single Thursday, which was its worst daily fall since March 2020.
Firm Response
In a letter sent to investors, fund leaders noted that the wider stock market and the artificial intelligence sector saw extreme price swings in November. The fund also stated that its business stays healthy and stable, pointing out that it has faced no major shifts in partner relationships and continues to hold extra margin. Management is keeping the portfolio at the lower end of past leverage levels while maintaining an optimistic outlook on future investment chances. Representatives for the fund declined to make any further public statements.
Context
Large drops in high-flying stock sectors often happen when investors worry that hype and spending have moved faster than actual financial returns. Funds that take big, borrowed positions in a single hot industry can see massive gains during good times, but they also face severe pressure when market sentiment suddenly shifts the other way.
