India launches VISTAR to modernise statistical system
Reported by Ananya Das (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - Business ·

India has launched VISTAR – the Viksit Bharat Initiative for Statistical Transformation, Analytics & Research – as a sweeping overhaul of the country's official statistical architecture. The move comes because traditional survey‑based methods no longer meet the data needs of a fast‑growing economy and carry the risk of relying on synthetic data. VISTAR aims to shift data collection beyond periodic surveys and administrative records by using interoperable datasets that bridge gaps and produce timely, reliable socioeconomic indicators. The new framework will operate at both central and state levels, allowing policymakers to base decisions on up‑to‑date evidence rather than outdated figures.
Context
Accurate statistics are essential for India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047; blind spots in data could lead to costly policy errors, misdirected investments and ineffective welfare programmes.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
India introduced VISTAR, a major reform to replace the old survey‑driven statistical system with a technology‑focused, interoperable data platform.
Why It Matters
Reliable, up‑to‑date statistics help the government design effective policies, direct investments wisely and run welfare schemes that actually reach people. Poor data can cause missteps that waste resources and hinder growth, especially as India targets developed‑nation status by 2047.
What Happens Next
Central and state statistical agencies will begin building the interoperable datasets and shifting data collection to continuous, tech‑driven methods, gradually phasing out reliance on periodic surveys.
