Saudi-Led Coalition Reports Downing Drone Over Medina, Houthis Deny Attack
Reported by Ishita Mukherjee (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - International ·
The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen stated on Friday, November 6, 2026, that it intercepted and destroyed a drone launched by Yemen's Houthis over the Medina region in Saudi Arabia. The Iran-aligned group denied carrying out any attack toward the kingdom. Medina hosts one of Islam's holiest sites and welcomes millions of Muslim pilgrims every year. Cross-border attacks between the Saudi-led coalition, which supports Yemen's internationally recognised government, and the Houthis, who control the capital Sanaa, have grown stronger during the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. This fighting opens another front in the conflict. The Houthis have repeatedly denied targeting Mecca and Medina, Islam's two holiest cities. They rejected earlier Saudi-led coalition accusations that they launched drones toward the cities.
Context
Medina and Mecca hold immense religious importance for Muslims across the world, making any reported security threat near them a major point of tension. The conflict in Yemen involves multiple regional powers and armed groups, often creating wider instability across the Middle East.
