Two Oil Tankers Catch Fire in Strait of Hormuz After Striking Mines, Says Iran
Reported by Varun Krishnan (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - International ·
Two oil tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after striking mines while using an unauthorized route, according to a statement by Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
Incident Details
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that the two vessels had turned off their navigation and identification systems while attempting to pass through the waterway. One tanker was located east of the strait while the other was inside it. Iranian media also reported that five other oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire in similar incidents a day earlier. However, maritime officials have not confirmed any of these reported events.
Wider Conflict
Tehran has tried to restrict traffic through the strategic waterway since the West Asia war began on February 28. This key shipping lane normally carries about one-fifth of the world's oil consumption. In response, the United States placed a blockade on Iranian ports and has been escorting tankers through the area. U.S. Central Command stated recently that all mines have been cleared from the waterway and reported helping Gulf countries export oil via Hormuz since the summer.
Context
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital energy transit chokepoints, connecting major oil producers in the Middle East to global markets. Disruptions in this narrow waterway frequently cause immediate ripples in international crude prices and shipping safety. Tensions involving military escorts and commercial navigation in the region highlight the high economic stakes attached to keeping these waters open.
