Market Performance

Indian stock markets experienced heavy volatility throughout Samvat 2082, driven by geopolitical tensions, shifting crude oil prices, and rising inflation fears. The Nifty 50 closed at 25,030.35 points on Friday, November 6, marking the final day of the Samvat year on Dhanteras with a daily rally of 493.75 points, or 2.01 per cent. The 30-share BSE Sensex also jumped 1,718.01 points, or 2.17 per cent, to settle at 81,028.02 points.

Late Rally

Despite a powerful late recovery that saw the Sensex surge 7,781.99 points, or 10.62 per cent, across seven straight sessions, and the Nifty rally 10.27 per cent in that same period, the benchmark Nifty index is still set to finish the year down by nearly 3.24 per cent. Earlier in the Samvat, the index tested the 22,300 support level twice and faced heavy pressure from global energy supply worries, the US-Israel war on Iran, and fears over US tariffs.

Gold Returns

In contrast, gold outperformed equities over the same yearly period. Although the precious metal saw a roller coaster ride and sharp price drops after hitting record highs in January 2026, December-expiry gold futures on the Multi Commodity Exchange gained roughly 10.31 per cent between October 20, 2025, and November 5, 2026.

Context

Samvat is the traditional Hindu financial year used by traders and investors in India to mark their annual accounts, often beginning around the festival of Diwali. Asset classes like gold and equities frequently react differently during periods of global uncertainty, with investors often turning to the precious metal as a safe haven when stock markets face geopolitical and economic headwinds.
