Gurdial Singh Bhangu, the chief coach of the Indian women's hockey team that won the 2002 Commonwealth Games title, has passed away at the age of 86 in Surrey, Canada.

Team Tributes And Real History

His death on Friday brought tributes from former players and colleagues on a WhatsApp group. The team's 2002 win against-the-odds inspired the 2007 Bollywood film Chak De! India starring Shah Rukh Khan. While the movie featured a fictionalized final against Australia, the real team beat England 3-2 with Mamta Kharab scoring a golden goal in extra time. Mir Ranjen Negi, who served as goalkeeping coach alongside Bhangu, credited him for the victory and praised his tactical knowledge. Pritam Siwach, a key member of the 2002 squad, also noted that Bhangu was the hero who helped them win the title and made them believe in themselves.

Early Life And Coaching Career

Born in 1941 in Lyallpur during pre-independence India, Bhangu grew up in Ambala and played university-level hockey. He later joined the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, where he trained under hockey legend Dhyan Chand and Balkishan Singh. From 1972 to 1976, he coached the Nigerian women's team and helped them reach their first World Cup. He took charge of the Indian women's team in 1998 after a 12th-place finish at the World Cup, leading them to a silver medal at the Bangkok Asian Games months later. He won the Dronacharya Award in 2001, making him the first hockey coach to receive the honor.

The Winning Moment

Before the 2002 final, Bhangu used a negative press report predicting an English victory to motivate his players. During the match, he drew on his deep rule knowledge to guide the team. When the extra-time hooter sounded just as India took a penalty corner, the England players stopped playing, but Bhangu had previously taught his squad that play continues until a penalty corner is finished. Mamta Kharab scored off the rebound, and though umpires initially disallowed it, the goal stood according to tournament rules.

Context

Coaches in Indian field hockey play a pivotal role in shaping team discipline, tactical awareness, and mental toughness on the international stage. Major multi-sport events like the Commonwealth Games often provide a crucial platform for the sport's growth and historic victories in the country.
