Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi ends long wait for Indian women's tennis with Chennai Open quarterfinal run
Reported by Aakash Bora (Staff Writer) · Indian Express - Sports ·
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi reached the quarterfinals of the Chennai Open before losing to the United States' Robin Montgomery 3-6, 3-6. The 17-year-old from Coimbatore ended a 15-year wait in Indian women's tennis, becoming the first player from the country to reach the singles last eight of a WTA Tour-level tournament since Sania Mirza. Indian-American Shikha Uberoi is the only other player to achieve this, back in 2005. Maaya secured her spot by defeating Poland's Weronika Falkowska in the Round of 16 for her second WTA Tour main-draw win.
The Match
In the quarterfinal, Robin Montgomery proved too composed and consistent. The 22-year-old American wrapped up the first set in 38 minutes and used powerful double-handed forehands in the second set to stay ahead. Maaya fought back from a 1-4 deficit in the second set by hitting deep groundstrokes and executing a smart inside-out forehand, but Robin closed out the match in 72 minutes. Robin praised Maaya courtside after the victory, stating she has a very bright future.
Next Steps
Maaya played her doubles quarterfinal shortly after, losing alongside Shrivalli Bhamidipaty to the Hungarian-Dutch pair of Panna Udvardy and Isabelle Haverlag 3-6, 4-6. Reflecting on her campaign, Maaya noted that her first-round win against world No. 115 Katarzyna Kawa was her favourite performance. She plans to take a break for the next few weeks before starting pre-season training for 2027. Her Chennai Open run has also lifted her in the live WTA rankings.
Context
The Chennai Open 2026 marks the final edition of this WTA 250 event. Breakthrough performances in such tournaments often serve as key stepping stones for young players transitioning from junior circuits to the demanding professional senior tour.
