Reported by Aakash Bora (Staff Writer) · The Hindu - National ·
Three people, including two children, were sent to the hospital after a fire broke out on Friday evening in a 25-storey residential building in Ghatkopar East, Mumbai. The blaze started on the 23rd floor of the Royal Altezza building on Vallabh Baug Lane in Pant Nagar. The Mumbai Fire Brigade received a call about the incident at 8.08 p.m. on November 6, 2026. Officials initially declared a Level-I fire call at 8.30 p.m. and raised it to Level-II at 8.52 p.m. DCP Ganesh Shinde stated that the fire began when residents used a drill to put up fairy lights for Deepavali, which caused a short circuit. The building has been shut until the Fire Department and the electricity board permit it to reopen, and residents were advised to stay with neighbours or family for the night. Sainath Awale suffered 27% burn injuries and was taken to Rajawadi Hospital. Two other people, Nirav Lodaya and Rajesh Lodaya, along with two children suffering from suffocation, were admitted to Zynova Hospital. All injured persons were reported to be in stable condition.
Context
Festive decorations like fairy lights often increase electrical loads in homes during festivals like Deepavali. High-rise fires require quick evacuation and coordination among multiple civic agencies to ensure safety and prevent major tragedies.
