Three children suffered head injuries on Tuesday when a classroom ceiling collapsed at a government primary school in Udaipur's Bhindar area. Two other students sustained minor injuries in the incident at the Government Primary School in Narada village, which occurred around 11 am while 32 children were inside the room.

Details of the Incident

Class 1 students Krishna Kumari and Kartik, along with Class 5 student Ganeshlal, were taken to Bhindar Government Hospital for treatment before being sent home by evening. The school runs up to Class 5 with 37 total students, leading to students from different classes sharing the same room. Headmaster Lal Singh Shaktawat stated that the building was constructed in 2001, became dilapidated, and officials had been informed about its poor condition prior to the collapse. The building was last repaired in 2020.

Official Action and Context

Following directions from the education department and local administration, the school building has been locked, and classes are shifting to a temporary location near a nearby Mataji mandir. This incident follows a July 2025 roof collapse at a government school in Jhalawar district's Piplodi village that killed seven children and injured others, which prompted a National Human Rights Commission notice. Political groups like the Cockroach Janta Party have also recently campaigned across Rajasthan regarding unsafe school infrastructure.

Context

School infrastructure safety in rural areas remains a significant concern for state education authorities across India. Dilapidated buildings often require urgent structural audits and timely repairs to prevent accidents, especially during adverse weather or as aging roofs degrade over time.
