The National Democratic Alliance won 34 of the 42 seats in the Silchar Municipal Corporation election on Tuesday. The BJP, the alliance’s lead party, secured 32 seats, including two wards (Ward 9 and Ward 20) that were uncontested. Its regional partner, Asom Gana Parishad, captured the remaining two seats for the alliance. The Congress party won two seats and independent candidates took the other eight wards. Silchar, a key economic hub in southern Assam, saw the BJP’s first strong foothold in the northeast during this vote. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the voters at the state party headquarters in Guwahati, saying the result shows people value development, peace, connectivity, empowerment and better governance. The election was the first for the newly created Silchar Municipal Corporation, which was upgraded from a municipal board in September 2025 after the board had been dissolved a decade earlier. Election officials released result charts confirming the seat distribution. The turnout and voting details were not disclosed in the report.

Context

The Silchar Municipal Corporation now handles urban planning, sanitation and local infrastructure for the growing city. Its elevation in 2025 reflected Silchar’s expanding population and economic importance in Assam. The NDA’s sweep strengthens the BJP’s influence in the northeast, a region where it has traditionally been weaker. Analysts see the result as a signal for the party’s strategy ahead of the next state elections.
