The Election Commission turned down a meeting request from opposition parliamentarians on Tuesday after learning they wanted the gathering held at the Parliament House Annexe rather than official poll body grounds. Over three hundred opposition MPs belonging to the INDIA bloc marched from the Parliament complex toward the Election Commission office to submit a formal memorandum.

Meeting Venue

The poll panel stated that no party had sought a prior appointment before four o'clock on Tuesday afternoon. The commission learned about the proposed delegation through the media and later received information from the Delhi Police deputy commissioner that two hundred forty MPs wanted to meet at the parliamentary annex building. The Election Commission called this demand unusual and refused it, stating that standard protocol requires such discussions to take place directly on commission premises.

Unprecedented Offer

Despite declining the outside venue, the commission offered to send its most senior officer on duty to receive the memorandum at the annex, which it described as an unprecedented step. However, the opposition MPs rejected this alternative proposal. The poll authority pointed to procedures established in recent years requiring parties to seek advance appointments through authorized representatives for mutually agreed meeting times.

Context

Election bodies maintain strict venue protocols for political delegations to ensure official neutrality and security during administrative interactions. Similar institutional guidelines govern how political parties interact with independent constitutional authorities across the country.
