Leadership Change

Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down from her leadership role across all formats of the game. The decision follows a meeting in Guwahati involving Board of Control for Cricket in India president Devajit Saikia, head coach Amol Muzumdar, Kaur, and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana.

Legacy and Records

During her tenure, the 37-year-old Kaur captained India in a total of 211 matches across Test, ODI, and T20 formats, securing 125 wins. She led the team to its first-ever ODI World Cup victory in 2025, three Asia Cup titles in 2016, 2022, and 2026, and consecutive gold medals at the Asian Games in 2023 and 2026. She also became the first person to captain over 150 international T20 matches. Former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh praised her contributions for the country during critical times.

New Appointments

Following Kaur's departure, opening batter Smriti Mandhana has been named as the new captain for upcoming fixtures, while Shafali Verma will serve as T20 vice-captain and Deepti Sharma as ODI vice-captain. Kaur remains included in the squad as India prepares to host Zimbabwe for two T20 matches and three ODIs.

Context

Cricket team captains often step down after long tenures to manage the heavy physical and mental demands of leading a national side across multiple formats. Such transitions allow senior players to focus purely on their batting or bowling performances while giving governing boards an opportunity to groom the next generation of leadership for upcoming global tournaments.
