West Bengal Director General of Police Sidd Nath Gupta received a six-month extension in his service from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Tuesday. Gupta, a 1992 batch Indian Police Service officer, was originally set to retire at the end of October. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the home ministry proposal for this extension in the public interest.
Background
The Election Commission originally appointed Gupta to the state police chief post on March 16 during the assembly elections to ensure fair polls, replacing the previous DGP Peeyush Pandey. After winning the elections and coming to power in the state, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari decided to keep Gupta in the role.
Other Leadership Changes
Several other high-level police posts are seeing changes or pending announcements across the country. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police chief Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor and Railway Protection Force chief Sonali Mishra are both retiring on October 31. The Bihar police currently has an officer on additional charge after the previous chief resigned, while Jammu and Kashmir police chief Nalin Prabhat is completing two years in his position this month.
Context
Top police leadership roles in India often see administrative extensions granted by central committees when governments want to maintain continuity in critical security positions. Such decisions balance service rules with the specific administrative needs of state and central law enforcement agencies.
