Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav led the Indian delegation at the Pre-COP31 meetings in Fiji on Wednesday to call for faster climate action and stronger implementation of the Paris Agreement. The preparatory talks take place ahead of the COP31 conference scheduled for November in Turkey. Australia, Fiji, and Tuvalu are co-hosting these meetings under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. During the plenary discussion, Yadav stated that while long-term goals exist, such as keeping global temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius, countries must close existing gaps to reach them. He pointed out the need to bridge differences between science and traditional knowledge, as well as between available resources and actual needs. He also urged nations to carry out their promises under the Paris Agreement in true letter and spirit.
Side Meetings
On the sidelines of the event, Yadav met with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J Mohammed and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell in Nadi. Their talks focused on climate finance, adaptation, just transition, and implementation priorities for COP31. Yadav stated that India will stay committed to working with the incoming COP Presidency and the UNFCCC. The Union Minister also held discussions with European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra. Their conversation focused on clean energy access, inclusive policy-making, and combining native wisdom with technology transfer to find practical solutions.
Context
Preparatory meetings like Pre-COP allow nations to iron out major differences and set shared priorities before the main annual UN climate summit begins. These discussions help build consensus on tricky issues like climate funding and emissions targets long before the formal negotiations start.
