India has called for faster action to carry out the Paris Agreement and close key knowledge gaps during preparatory climate talks in Fiji.
Meeting Details
Heading the Indian delegation at the Pre-COP31 meetings, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav stated that nations must fulfill their climate pledges in true letter and spirit. The preparatory sessions are co-hosted by Australia, Fiji, and Tuvalu under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, leading up to the main conference in November in Turkey. While the Paris Agreement sets a target to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, Yadav noted that reaching this goal needs proper support systems and a strong focus on fixing current shortcomings.
Key Discussions
The Indian minister emphasized bridging the divide between scientific facts and traditional wisdom, alongside matching available resources with actual needs. He urged countries to share annual success stories to prove effective delivery, high-impact mitigation, and large-scale adaptation where impacts are worst. On the sidelines, Yadav met with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J Mohammed and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell to talk about climate finance, adaptation, and a just transition. He also met European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra to discuss clean energy access and science-based policy making.
Context
Pre-COP meetings are vital preparatory gatherings held weeks before the main annual UN climate summit to iron out differences and build consensus among nations. These early discussions help set the official agenda and negotiating priorities for the upcoming global conference.
