The Maha Vikas Aghadi opposition alliance in Maharashtra is facing internal strains over seat-sharing just days before the October 23 Legislative Council elections. While the coalition recently decided to contest five seats together, Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT) have both fielded candidates in the Amravati Teachers constituency. Meanwhile, the Sena (UBT) and the NCP (SP) are pitted against each other in the Marathwada Graduates constituency.
Nominations And Disputes
Tuesday marks the last day to file nominations, with candidates having until October 9 to withdraw. In the Amravati Teachers seat, Congress has fielded Aditi Pohare, who joined the party shortly before her candidature was announced. The Shiv Sena (UBT) has put up Dattatray Lahane, who filed his nomination on October 6. In the Marathwada Graduates constituency, the Sena (UBT) fielded Dilip Ghuge, while Dr Pratapsinh Patil of the NCP (SP) filed his nomination as an authorised candidate of his party and the MVA.
Leadership Responses
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut defended the party's decision to contest both seats, calling it a friendly fight and arguing that the party was not claiming every seat demanded by Congress. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar emphasized that voter registration is crucial in these elections, noting that parties avoid demanding seats where allies have sitting members. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule downplayed the differences, stating that the issue would become clear after further discussions.
Context
Legislative Council elections in teacher and graduate constituencies rely on specialized voter rolls where educators and degree holders must register separately rather than participating in standard general public voting. Internal disagreements over seat distribution are a common challenge for multi-party coalitions during state-level elections when allies hold competing regional claims.
