The Split

The Maha Vikas Aghadi opposition alliance in Maharashtra is facing internal strain as parties prepare for the October 23 Legislative Council elections. Despite an initial agreement to contest five seats together, the Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT) have both put up candidates in the Amravati Teachers constituency. Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the NCP (SP) are locked in a direct contest in the Marathwada Graduates constituency.

Nominations and Claims

In Amravati, the Congress fielded Aditi Pohare, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) nominated Dattatray Lahane. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut defended the move, stating the party would not give up the seat simply to avoid a contest. In Marathwada, the Shiv Sena (UBT) fielded Dilip Ghuge, followed by Dr Pratapsinh Patil announcing his candidature for the NCP (SP). NCP (SP) leaders argued their party has won the seat for three consecutive terms.

Context

These legislative council elections involve specialized electorates of teachers and graduates rather than ordinary voters, making local voter registration crucial. Political alliances in India often struggle with seat-sharing arrangements at the regional level even when national opposition unity is maintained.
