Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has brought back his controversial 80 versus 20 political pitch, linking the math behind Rajya Sabha elections directly to the upcoming assembly polls. Speaking at an event marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25 years in public service, Adityanath noted that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party fielded eight candidates against the Samajwadi Party's two for 10 Rajya Sabha seats. He cited this as proof that 80 percent of voters back the ruling alliance, leaving only 20 percent for the opposition. The chief minister dismissed the Samajwadi Party's core demographic framework known as the PDA as a minority force, stating that the contest has once again shaped up as an 80 versus 20 battle.

Reactions

SP president Akhilesh Yadav sharply criticized the remarks in a social media post, arguing that the statement admitted atrocities against the PDA would not stop under the current regime. Yadav claimed that the remarks stemmed from an unbalanced state of mind caused by the defeat in the 2024 elections. Adityanath also used the event to praise Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership and for presenting India as a strong nation on the global stage. Several leaders attended the gathering, including deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak and multiple BJP MLAs, where the prime minister virtually administered a pledge for a developed India by 2047.

Context

The 80-versus-20 phrase has previously been used by the ruling party during state campaigns as a reference to demographic estimates. Rajya Sabha elections in India are indirect polls where state assembly members vote to send representatives to the upper house of Parliament.
