GeneralUttarakhand Election Office Starts Special Drive to Trace Missing Voters After List Revision

The Election Commission has started a special verification campaign to find over eight lakh voters who were earlier labeled as uncollectible during a major voter list revision in Uttarakhand.

Drive Details

The effort begins with camps lasting three days at all twelve thousand five hundred forty-three polling booths from October eighth to tenth. Officials will then conduct door-to-door checks from October twelfth to twentieth. The main goal is to fix errors from the recent revision rather than start a brand new one. Booth Level Officers will match the current voter registry with the older list to spot anyone who dropped off. Eligible voters who are found will be added back using Form Six. The state recorded eight lakh twenty-six thousand nine hundred seventy-seven electors marked as uncollectible during the revision. Dehradun has the highest count at one lakh eighty-six thousand eight, followed by Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar.

Participation

Uttarakhand Chief Electoral Officer BVRC Purushottam noted that local political party agents and awareness groups will join booth officers during the camps and home visits. First-time voters turning eighteen by October first can also get help filing their registration forms. The final voter list published on October third stands at seventy-one lakh fifty-eight thousand nine hundred forty-nine people, which is nearly eight lakh lower than the pre-revision count. Registration officers will handle these new applications according to the Representation of the People Act and related rules.

Context

Voter list revisions happen periodically to clean up registries by removing names of people who have moved, passed away, or are registered multiple times. Ensuring accurate voter rolls is a core duty of election bodies everywhere to maintain fair and transparent democratic elections.

What Happened

The Election Commission is carrying out a targeted verification drive to trace over eight lakh voters whose names disappeared from the main electoral roll following a massive revision process in Uttarakhand.

Why It Matters

Accurate voter lists are the bedrock of any democratic election. When large numbers of names drop off a registry due to administrative categorization, eligible citizens risk losing their fundamental right to vote, making post-revision correction drives crucial for protecting public participation.

What Happens Next

Booth Level Officers will complete the three-day camps and subsequent door-to-door visits by October 20, after which newly verified and eligible citizens will be formally added to the voter rolls through Form 6 processing.
