Indian stock market benchmark indices opened sharply lower and stayed under pressure after the central bank raised rates by 25 basis points and shifted its stance to calibrated tightening, triggering a sell-off. Continued weakness in the rupee also weighed on investor sentiment. The Nifty 50 dropped 0.76% to close at 22,603, while the Sensex fell 0.59% to finish at 72,638.
Sectoral Performance
On the sectoral front, PSU Banks and Media emerged as the key gainers, while Metal, Realty, Auto, and IT remained the major laggards. The broader market stayed mixed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 dropping 0.63% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gaining 0.30%.
Market Outlook
Sumeet Bagadia, Executive Director at Choice Broking, noted that Dalal Street sentiment remains cautious as the 50-stock index pared early gains. Support is placed between 22,500 and 22,550, while immediate resistance stands at 22,750 to 22,800. For the Bank Nifty, the index recovered from intraday lows and formed a doji-like candle reflecting indecision. Bagadia recommended five breakout stocks to buy: Jyothy Labs, Chalet Hotels, Orkla India, Union Bank, and PNB Housing Finance.
Context
Central bank interest rate hikes increase borrowing costs for businesses and consumers, which often dampens stock market enthusiasm in the short term. Market analysts closely monitor technical indicators like moving averages and the Relative Strength Index to gauge potential trend reversals during volatile trading periods.
