Regular physical activity is vital for keeping muscles and bones healthy, but osteoporosis makes this difficult by causing weak and brittle bones. Orthopaedic specialist Dr Ankur Singh states that exercise plays a key role in maintaining bone strength, improving balance, and lowering the risk of falls.
Exercise Types
Patients should create a personal plan with a doctor or physiotherapist, especially after a fracture. Low-impact activities like brisk walking, stair climbing, and low-impact aerobics help many people. Supervised resistance exercises using light weights, resistance bands, or body weight can also build muscle and stimulate bones. Balance exercises like standing on one leg with support and heel-to-toe walking improve stability, while gentle stretching aids flexibility.
What to Avoid
People with osteoporosis should avoid forceful forward bending, repeated spine twisting, high-impact jumping, and sudden, uncontrolled movements. Heavy lifting with poor technique also raises the risk of injury. While swimming and cycling help with heart health and muscle endurance, they are not weight-bearing and should not be the only workouts used to improve bone strength.
Context
Osteoporosis is a common condition that mostly affects older adults, making bones fragile and much more likely to break from minor strains or falls. Managing the condition typically requires a combination of medical treatment, proper nutrition like calcium and vitamin D, and careful physical activity. Consulting a medical professional before starting any new fitness routine ensures safety and prevents further injury.
