Tribal leader and social activist Nisha Kumari Bhagat died by suicide in Ranchi on Friday, November 6, 2026, minutes after recording a ten-minute live broadcast on Facebook. In the video, she accused Chief Minister Hemant Soren's government, local police, and individuals linked to land mafia of harassing her. She stated that she was paying the price for exposing the shortcomings of the State government to the public. During the broadcast, she also placed a call to the Pithoria police station SHO and claimed she was falsely labeled as a broker for the RSS and BJP. Bhagat mentioned her father as a Jharkhand activist, remembered her mother, and asserted that she was fighting for the rights of her community against land brokers. Police rushed to her residence in the Pithoria police station area on Friday afternoon and transported her to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences. A team of doctors in the emergency department examined her and declared her brought dead, according to RIMS Director Dr. B.K. Sinha. Originally from Gumla district and belonging to the Oraon tribal community, Bhagat had previously contested the 2024 Assembly election from the Gumla seat on a Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha ticket, though she left the party afterward and remained politically unaligned. She also served as the Central Women President of the Central Sarna Committee, working to preserve Santhali culture and tradition.

Reactions

Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi sharply criticized the Hemant Soren government following the incident. Mr. Marandi stated that Bhagat was a vocal voice for tribal society and held the Chief Minister, the Pithoriya police station in-charge, and a converted Christian leader working for a missionary named Ajay Tirkey responsible. He alleged that land grabbing is active across state blocks and police stations at the behest of the Chief Minister. The BJP leader demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the arrest of those named by Bhagat, a CBI investigation into the matter, and strict action against the guilty after visiting the hospital.

Context

Land rights and protection for indigenous communities remain central social and political issues in Jharkhand. Leaders and activists frequently raise concerns regarding tribal land alienation and administrative pressure. Support systems exist for individuals facing severe emotional distress, including state health helplines and dedicated prevention services.
