Subaru is adding a large electric vehicle to its lineup with the upcoming 2028 Getaway SUV, which features three rows of seats and a driving range of over 300 miles. The new model comes with a standard dual-motor all-wheel drive system that produces 420 horsepower. For charging, the vehicle includes a standard NACS port that lets drivers use the Tesla Supercharger network. When towing heavy loads up to its 3500-pound limit, the battery range will drop notably.

Interior And Cargo

The cabin offers three rows of seating with space comparable to rivals like the Kia EV9 and the Hyundai Ioniq 9. Base Premium and high-end Touring trims come with captain's chairs in the second row, while the mid-range Limited trim uses a three-across bench seat by default. The third row seats two people and folds flat into the floor using power buttons in the cargo area. Cargo space measures 16 cubic feet behind the back row and expands to 46 cubic feet when those seats are folded down.

Technology And Safety

Every model includes a 14.0-inch touchscreen interface alongside a 12.3-inch gauge display. Standard tech features cover Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a pair of wireless phone chargers, and four USB-C ports for rear passengers. The base audio system has six speakers, while the top Touring trim upgrades to a 13-speaker Harman/Kardon setup. Standard safety equipment includes Subaru's EyeSight driver assistance technology with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automated emergency braking.

Timeline And Context

Context

The vehicle was originally planned for release in late 2026 as a 2027 model, but production delays pushed the timeline back to early 2027 for the 2028 model year. Subaru shares this vehicle platform with Toyota, making the Getaway mechanically similar to the Toyota Highlander EV. Electric three-row SUVs have become a major growth area for automakers as families look for battery-powered alternatives to traditional gasoline-powered utility vehicles.
